Why gutters fill and overflow

The Bureau of Meteorology’s Gold Coast Seaway records average 137 mm of rain in December, and wetter months follow. Queensland Government advice is to keep gutters and downpipes clean so that water can drain away as quickly as possible.

The State Emergency Service adds that storms are the most common severe weather event in Queensland and can strike at any time of year, and that gutters and downpipes should be kept clear.

Signs

How to tell your gutters need attention

• Water spilling over the front of the gutter when it rains.
• Plants or seedlings growing in the gutter.
• Leaves, twigs and bark visible at the gutter edge or sitting in the roof valleys.
• Damp stains on the walls or fascia below.

Cleaning does not repair damage. The Queensland Government advises fixing cracked or broken guttering and flashing, as well as loose tiles. The State Emergency Service adds corrosion, rotten timber and loose fittings to the list of things to check and fix before storms.

Leaves, bark and embers

Queensland Government bushfire guidance is to remove leaves, twigs, bark and other combustible material from rooftops and gutters, to check gutters and any gutter guards routinely, and to clear roof vents of debris. That matters most if your home backs onto bushland.

How often

Monier says gutters, downpipes and valleys should be cleaned at least once a year, and more often if trees surround the roof. The State Emergency Service also advises trimming branches that overhang the house.

Safety

Ladders and gutters

WorkSafe Queensland says falls from ladders cause serious and fatal injuries even at relatively low heights, and that ladders suit only light work where you can keep three points of contact. It also says a step platform can protect better than a step ladder because it has a small working platform and a partial handrail.
